IHAH, the Honduran Institute of Anthropology and History reported a field team in Copán made a major breakthrough in Maya archaeology and literature.
In prior excavations, researchers uncovered the tomb of dynastic founder K'Inich Yax K'uk Mo' (ruled c. 426-437 A.D.).
Archaeologists working in the Sepulturas “tombs” area near the Copán Acropolis also discovered a Maya Codex, a rare pre-Columbian book made of bark and stucco, dating from the Classic Era of Maya civilization.
According to research associate Angela Jarek Cardona, the team unearthed the document as a result of another shifting of the bed of the Copán River caused by flooding during and after Hurricane Mitch.
The codex, which workers at the site called the Chamil Hun, or “Death Book”, contained detailed prophecies reaching far into the future.
Unlike the few surviving codices, this “Death Book” predicted cataclysmic events, including those at the end of the current life cycle – in December 2012!
In 2001, Professor Vinny Alfano flies to San Pedro Sula, Honduras to attend the funeral of his graduate school flame, Anne-Marie Bakke. His college roommate, the sophisticated Honduran archaeologist Miguel Suazo, meets him at the airport and suggests that Vinny assist in investigating the murder. Miguel sends Vinny into the Maya region to meet Dr. Angela Jarek, a stunning, witty, and self-confident Maya expert, who is able to help him decipher some cryptic clues regarding Anne-Marie’s murder and the lost Death Book. Angela and Vinny have a torrid encounter in the bedroom – and continue it among the Copán Maya ruins.
On another plane of existence, Feathered Serpent and a pantheon of Maya gods periodically debate how they should end the current era. They are not pleased that some of their creations have the ability to peer into the future.
